ICC announces umpires for World Cup
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced umpires and referees who will supervise the matches of the upcoming World Cup tournament. Different umpires for warm-up and group stage matches have been appointed. All participating teams had been waiting anxiously for ICC’s pronouncement of umpires, as they are instrumental for every match. The names of the umpires who will be the part of ICC World Cup 2011 are following:
Steve Davis, Dharmasena, Aleem Dar, Marais Erasmus, Ian Gould, Daryl Harper, Tony Hill, Asoka de Silva, Simon Taufel, Rod Tucker, Richard Kettleborough, Nigel Llong, Oxenford, Amish Saheba and Shavir Tarapore.
The ICC Umpire of the Year 2009 and 2010, Aleem Dar; four-time ICC Umpire of the Year, Simon Taufel and a famous umpire Ian Gould. The 58-year old Steve Davis has umpired almost 95 one day internationals so far.
Madugalle, Chris Broad, Jeff Crowe, Roshan Mahanama and Andy Pycroft have been announced as referees. The opening match will be played in Mirpur, Bangladesh on 19 February 2011, for which England’s Steve Davis and Sri Lanka’s Kumara Dharmasena will be the on-field umpires. Billy Doctrove and Asad Rauf will do their work as third and fourth umpires, respectively. The ICC press release states, “Steve Davis of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires and Kumara Dharmasena of the Emirates International Panel will stand in the tournament opener”.
The ICC World Cup 2011 is being jointly hosted by Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India. Pakistan was also a nominee to be as a co-host but was omitted later due to security concerns. The inauguration ceremony of the World Cup will be held on February 17 in Bangladesh. All preparations for the ceremony have been finalized. The tournament will be opened by India and Bangladesh on 19 February in Mirpur. Fourteen teams are participating in the tournament and have announced their squads along with their captains. Only Pakistan is yet to announce their skipper, hopefully on 4 February.
